The Tektites
Tektites (of the Greek tektos, means molten) are small globules of natural glass, often in the shape of
drop, of a few millimetres to a few centimetres in size. They contain from 70 to
80% silica , 3 to 16% alumina .
For a long time regarded as meteorites, but many wondered about their origin. This problem was solved recently, partly thanks to their geographical distribution: they are distributed on the surface of the Earth in zones of elliptic form. These zones are associated
with craters of impact, and their age is the same one as that of the
associated crater.
They are not molten meteorites, but molten terrestrial materials. At the time of the impact of a rather
importantmeteorite , the heat produced by the shock melted the terrestrial ground, which was vitrified and was projected in the form of drops. These drops
were projeted further on an elliptic surface contrary to the direction of arrival of the meteorite. Some are projected so much extremely, that
they leave the atmosphere, then fall down thousands of kilometers further. While falling down in the atmosphere, these tektites melt again, and will keep the traces of this double fusion.
